What to do?

I live in NY. Last October I was in a small accident on the highway right by where there was construction taking place. I hit a large metal object that caused about $2000 in damages to my car. The construction workers pulled the object off of the highway after I hit it. I filed a claim against them through NYS dept of transportation the next day. Someone from the construction company contacted me towards the end of December with some questions. After that I spoke with this person one other time as follow up to see what was going on. Nothing ever happened so Im taking them to small claims court next week. The only issue that I have is that I know they are going to argue that the metal object fell off a truck and didnt fall from the construction site. What should I do or say so that I can have a good chance of winning this case?
