What to do while waiting for claim resolution

What is the name of your state?
California

My new VW Touareg was stolen at the dealership while having its first 5K service (they gave the car to somebody else with the keys in the engine); we did two claims to both insurance companies involved and they seem to be responsive, however, because the case implied a "Garage Keeper" policy is taking longer to resolve; in the meantime, we have payments to do as schedulled by VW credit, and that -they tell us- is our responsibility. Is that true? we did 4 monthly payments and used the car for less than 4 months, so is not logical that we have to continue to pay instead of the insurance company; if you pay how can you get reimbursed that money?

My response:

It's called making a claim for "loss of use". The dealership's insurance company is on the hook.

By the way, how did the keys get "in the engine"? Must have been hell on the pistons!
