what if???

I live in Richmond, VA and I was just tailgated by a cop for several miles. If for any reason he all of a sudden hit me from behind what would happen. Are police officers under the same law on duty? Would they have to pay for the damage or would the state? Could I press charges for the tailgating?

Generally, YOUR insurance company would pay for the damages.
