Question

I was divorced in 1988. I was responsible for certain bills that we had accumulated during our 5yrs of marriage and the ex-wife was responsible for the remaining. She was also awarded the house.
Now 14yrs. later I find out that the bills she was responsible for, such as a Master card and a Yonkers card, and the mortgage on the house are still in mine and her name. She has just continued to use them instead of paying them off and canceling them.
She now has fallin on hard times and has quit paying on these charges. The bank is in the proccess of foreclosing and the creditors all have my home phone number they accessed through directory assistance, not to metion I applied for a visa card and was denied.
What can I do to legaly fix my credit which has always been good? How do I get them to take my name off there account??
I live in Iowa....
thanks

My response:

She has been in Contempt of Court for all these years, which is quasi-criminal in nature.

You file for an Order to Show Cause re: Contempt of Court in the same court where your divorce was granted.

Then, watch as all the fun begins.

You see, courts really, really, really hate it when someone disregards and disobeys their orders. Your ex-wife could very well get her own set of matching bracelets for her disobedience and placing you in financial jeopardy. She could get a lot of time in jail for this malfeasance.

Unfortunately, that does little to nothing for you in terms of the creditor's calls to you, and the foreclosure of the home.
