Q: i agree they should be paid but not by me!

A: They had your number. Anyway, now you need to have a serious talk with son and get your money back from that scoundrel.

You might be able to get your credit-card company to do a chargeback.

Perry is wrong...probably.
It sounds like your husband was there and signed for his credit card so, you owe the money. In fact the rental company was probably getting an authorization for the overages the whole time.
If your son is such a scumbag, why did you ever put your card up for the little bum. You got what you deserve for trusting the little brat that you didn't raise to be responsible...which is evident where he got it since you are not willing to take responsibility for your own actions.
Didn't you think it Odd that he had the car for 2-4 months after the insurance company was supposed to stop paying for it? It had to be a while to rack up a 2 grand bill on TOP of what the insurance company paid.
Take your lumps..collect from your little bum, and next time he gets in a bind..say "No.. cause your not responsible... remember the rental car?" and throw him out.
Remember..I am not a lawyer..I'm just a jerk and this aint legal advice...it's just hitting you over the head with the truth.

You won't say what you think of my advice because you won't THINK. Which must be what you did when your son was driving around in the rental car for 4 months, and then you act shocked when you get stuck for the bill. You've yet to comtemplate the simple solution. Pay the bill and get the money back from HIM. ANY time you put your name and credit on the line it means YOU are willing to foot the bill if the other person welches. There is no need for advice here because NOBODY did anything wrong except your son apparently by trying to drive a rental car for free for almost half a year. Apparently you need some ice for that truth that hit you over the head that you are still in denial of and that's Mr. Jerk to you.
