bad check

I recently received a notice addressed to my husband who passed away July 16, 1999, in regards to a bad check that was written Jan. 21, 1993 and signed by me. What is the time element on this type of collection? This is the first notice we ever received. The store is out of business in our area and has been for 4 years so I can not go bsck to them to verify the check was unsuffient funds. The collection company enclosed a copy of the check. But the time element bugs me.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I live in Kansas City, Kansas. The
"supposed" check was written in KCK also. I have been at this address for 34 years, so it is not a case of just locating us.
