Bad Puppy (Will I get away with this?)

What is the name of your state? Illinois

Hi,

I am usually a decent person, but I admit a serious gambling addiction. On last Sat. night, I trashed my bank account with four Visa debit transactions to an offshore internet casino. Sunday and Monday were pure hell approaching hopelessness.

The four transactions "posted" to my account Tues. night (and left a negative balance

This morning (Wed.) I discovered, on the net, that internet gambling is illegal in Illinois. I honestly did not know this last Sat. night. Just a few minutes ago, I called my bank's dispute department to chargeback the transactions (based on them being illegal).

They, actually, gave my account a temporary credit (over $1,000), and are sending "dispute" forms in the mail for me to fill out!

-Are my chances good of actually getting the chargeback’s to stick?
-Any advice on what I should say (and not say) on the forms?

I, of course, did not start with criminal intent, and I promise to learn my lesson

Thank you

Well, if it's illegal, it's illegal. I'd reference the applicable Il. statutes.

Are you saying that you told the bank to give somebody some money, the bank gave the people the money, and now you don't want to pay back the bank the money you overdrew?

No. A chargeback (if approved) will retrive the money from the offshore merchant, who took it in a transaction I did not know was illegal. I assure you the bank will be fine.

Thanks Happy Trails,

That's an overwhelming amount of information, but also very interesting.
