bank charges

What is the name of your state? FL

I made an error and made several purchases on my debit card to
my checking account, and the question i had is twofold; one,
does the bank have any responsibility to not honor these purchases (as it is not a check) like the credit card co if you are over your limit they do not approve your purchase -which i made most with the debit card and not with the credit card portion)
as i made a series of small purchases - each of which cost me the
$32 overdraft charge (i mean can this go on ad infinitum?)

and two, the back has also assessed me a 4.95 charge for not
taking care of this overdraft (which they also charged my account the extra $32 overdraft fee on top of their late fee)

is this legal?

Yes, its legal.

The question of not honoring charges on your debit card is rather interesting. In my personal experience, when they run a debit card thru, if there aren't enough funds in the account to cover the purchase, the card is rejected. So, I'm surprised that they let it go thru. Check with your bank on this, if they allow that kind of thing to go thru and you suffer the overdraft charges, I'd say that's pretty greedy - they get a LOT for overdraft fees.
