bank fees

What is the name of your state? Indiana
The bank overdrew my account and charged me 216.00 in one day in overdraft fees. It is 27.00 per check. However, all the checks came in the same day and they did not pay the ones I did have the money for. Instead (and it is blatant) by the print out they gave me, they paid them from biggest to smallest. Not even in check number order. What recourse do I have. By the way I have a savings with this bank and transferred money into the account, that is how I found out I was overdrawn. They never even notified me. I still do not believe I was overdrawn to start with and I ma looking into that further as well.

Unfortunately this is how most banks do the business. They usually pay checks and then later deposits the funds. Bottomline: If you don't have funds to cover checks, checks will bounce.

Just think of this as a valuable lesson and get it over with rather than accumulating $5/day for non-paid accounts. I collect on overdraft fees after CA adds anywhere from $50-$200.

Thank you for your reply but I don't think I am willing to take this lying down. It is the principal of the fact that there was enough money in there to cover almost all of the checks. They were all from 6.00 to 30.00. There were only 2 larger checks. They took those two overdrew the account took 2 27.00 fees and overdrew it even more. I really believe this is an unfair practice. If you have 210.00 in the bank and 290.00 checks come in you you only be overdrafted by those which really overdrew your account not the overdraft fees which overdrew your account. I beleive people all over are in my shoes. This was not an intentional thing I did by overdrawing the account I usaully keep abit in there. I just forgot to subtract out the direct mortgage payment. And now because of 80.00 I owe 216.00 They actuallu charge me 9 fees in the same day and I am appalled that banks are getting away with this.

What you need to do is go into the bank and speak with an officer and see if you can get some or all of then fees waived. Just some old fashion groveling!
Bill Collector is correct. It's not only collections but, you may well find your account closed and name in chexsystems and you'll play hell finding another bank.

I would go to the bank in person and very politely and cordially present your feelings to the bank manager. Even if the manager will not admit their policies and practices are wrong, perhaps you could get the manager to waive half of the fees, in order to retain you as a customer of the bank. You would acknowledge that you NOW understand the way this works, but wish the have half the fees waived in order to keep your business at the bank.

I have not bounced a check for many years, until recently. My grandfather had a stroke, and I ran off to California to see him in the hospital, forgetting I had auto-withdrawls I needed to deposit to cover. I bounced something like ((((NINE)))) checks. The fees were massive. When I got back in town and discovered this, I went into the bank and politely explained my dilemma, and that I knew it was my fault, but that I didn't have the money to cover all the overdraft and bounce fees. They said since I had been a good customer for so many years they would waive half the fees.

Maybe you can work out something similar. It helps if you have been with the bank for many years like I had.

thanks for all of your advice

I had called the corporate office and they brushed me off like I was some ant at their picnic. That is what prompted me to write last night. I was so angry and I have found that mostly in this world, people and businesses are unwilling to work with you and many of them see it as "your problem" When I got that response from corporate offices I assumed the branch would be the same way. I went in there and showed them what was going on and that I had enough to cover a majority of the checks anyway, She sat down with me and figured it all out. They overdrew me by 517.00 all total for the two days. When the lady at the bank did all the figuring she determined I would only have "truly" been overdrawn by $40.67 had all the small checkes been paid first. I had 11 overdraft fees. The waived ten and charged me 1 od fee because the very last check written was for 53.00. She figured I would really have overdrawn just one check. Guess I was wrong. There actually is a business out there that takes on your problem and makes their problem too. Thank goodness the branch does not operate like corporate.

Glad it worked out for you. Branch managers don't like to lose good business and the vast majority will be reasonable when a longtime customer has a one time problem along these lines.

I was really glad it worked too. I have been a customer there a very long time. I have never overdrawn my account before. I never realized those fees stack up like that.
