Bank Mistake in your Favor...what 2 do?

OK, forgetting the ethical thing here for a second.

I sent an email to an unamed bank where I have two credit cards about consolidation. It was an inquiry on how things would work, not a request for consolidation.

They replied back on how to do it. I have not called them confirming, as I was unsure who I was going with in the long run.

I checked the balance of one card, and on the same day they sent the email, they credited the account of one of the cards with a payment in the thousands, bascially paying the one card off. They did NOT transfer the balance. They actually just showed a payment.

I didn't send in such a payment.

I even got an email confirmation of the payment made.

Question is, if I decided not to tell them off this, they'll probably catch it (I would hope, its a big amount) and then do what to me?

Is there a possibility they don't catch this? If they catch it months on down the road, will I owe them for their mistake?

Never seen anything like it except in Monopoly Chance Cards. I'm very, very tempted to call and close the card and see if I get away with it, but I sure don't want bad credit again--took me years to get it back to good score.

I know I *should* call them, but its goign to hurt.

They will catch the mistake and you will be on the hook for the debt.

You will not get away with it. It will be caught and then one or the other F.I. will start calling you, and yes you will be obligated to pay them.

By the way, I really should not have answered your question since you cannot follow the rules of this forum.

What state are you in?

How do you forget the ethical part when looking in the mirror everyday?

Use the mistake

Close the card, open a new card at a different bank that will see you paid down a big debt and give you a low rate. Then call the original bank and let them praise your honesty for telling them. Then do a balance transfer to the new bank with the new rate!

Its a Win-Win!

I like your first sentence "Forgetting the ethical thing for a second". Can I technically "forget the ethical thing for a second" while I, oh I don't know, shoot someone? Drive a car into a preschool? Stick up my local 7-11? No!

G.O.D. Veronica, how do you hold your tongue on these people that think they can freely make a buck on the "banks" dime? Do they not understand that money IS NOT FREE!!!!

Sorry, all, I feel better now and will go back into my corner.

I must have been in a good mood that day. Besides, they'll find out what happens when you try to rip off a bank. That's justice enough for me!

Ahhh, a stiletto where it really hurts! I've got a visual ya don't wanna know about.

OP, all kidding aside, just do the right thing. It'll make you feel better and not have you looking over your shoulder all the time. You know, that little thing that gets all my kids to be honest (eventually), conscience. Come on, you can do it, you can do it.
