Business credit card problems

What is the name of your state? Massachusetts

Back in the late 90's I had a small contracting business (8 people) in which we had American Express business credit cards which I had signed for.

In 1999 I sold the business but transfering the signature on the card slipped through the cracks. A year after the new owner took over, he defaulted on the cards and a year after that the company went bankrupt.

AMEX came after me for the money through a collection agency. The guy at the collection agency, for some unknown reason, told me that if this was a business account (which it was) then according to Massachusetts law, I could not be held responsible. So I told him (In writing) to leave me alone and they did.

But now... this debt shows up on my credit report. Is there anything I can do?

Thanks for any help
