Cahsier's check refused

What is the name of your state? Illinois

My wife found an old cashier's check for $10,000 that had slipped behind her dresser. We took it to US Bank, which is the successor (buyer) of the bank that issued it, and they refused to cash it. They said "You must have had it reissued" BUT we still have the check and never had it reissued. What do we do?

How old is this check? There are a couple of possibilities here. You can contact (or have your bank contact) the check company. Even though the check was issued by US Bank (or a bank that they bought) it would actually be payable through an account elsewhere. My guess, seeing that it's US Bank, is that the check is from Traveler's Express. Try them and see if they can tell you anything about the check.

Another option is to contact your State Treasurer and see if those funds were escheated to the state as unclaimed property. The money should be out there somewhere. You just have to track it down.
