Can I legally deposit a check with my name and someone else's on it?

I received a security deposit check in my name and the name of one of my former roommates (there were 4 of us in total at said apartment). However, she is no longer in the area, and our relationship is so sour that she would likely refuse to sign anyway (in addition, she is not entitled to the full balance because of some delinquencies on her behalf). I would like to deposit the check and allot each of my roommates what they owe, but do not know if I can legally deposit the check without the other girl's signature. The check's origin is in IL but I will need to deposit in a national credit union based out of VA. Thanks.

Depends on how the names are. If they are 'name AND name', then both parties have to endorse the check.
If they are 'name OR name', then the check would be valid with either party endorsement.

Why has he spent over $1.35M in legal fees to block disclosure... rather than spend $12 for a VALID birth cert to settle the matter? The 'certificate' he has presented doesn't qualify to get a drivers license, wouldn't allow a child to qualify for Little League, or for a real citizen to get a US passport!

Thanks for responding-- there's no "and" or "or" just a comma between the two names.

With todays automated check clearing, you might consider just endorsing the check with your signature only and depositing to your account via ATM (not a personal teller). It is possible that the check would go through. One warning if you are going to try this..... do NOT spend the money until you have waited a week to 10 days to see if it is going to be stopped and the amount deducted from your account.
