Can my checking account be affected?

I live in Michigan and my husband has a pending lawsuit for past medical bills. We have two joint accounts, one is mine with my Social Security Disablity being direct deposited; the other is his with his SSI Disability being deposited. If they get a judgement against him, can they take any money from our checking accounts? As I understand it, our disability payments can not be garnished. But, I am worried about our checking accounts. The only money going into these accounts is disability.

Most states exempt retirement or diability income from levy. That does not mean that it won't be done, but if it does happen, you can file a challenge to the seizure (instructions included with the notice) and the court will return those exempt funds.
