This Can't Be Legal?

What is the name of your state? NC
My kids daily bring home things too buy from school as my taxes aren't high enough.
I sent a check for $19.90 for a book she wanted. I was charged more from my checking account.
There reason, it does state on the form I sent in with the check that the co. uses electronic check withdrawals and you may be charged additional fee for such actions.
Why should I pay for this check to clear, help.

It's called a convenience fee, it's a convenience for the seller and costs the buyer money. You were aware of the additional fees, if you disagreed with them you should have paid in another manner.

What other way is there to pay, money order no receipt and cost money, put my credit card in the envelope, no.

I just think that forever no one ever charged for you to pay them now a simple check and you have to pay, just seems wrong in the age of technology.

They want your business then charge you for it. And yes I could have said no to my kids.

Sounds crooked to me if someone can charge you more than you write a check for (especially if they did not tell you up front how much that would be), but you must have signed something authorizing them to do that. It is the first time I have ever heard of anyone charging extra to accept a check for a "purchase". I have never been charged anything extra to pay by check, or electronic funds transfer to or from a checking account or to pay a bill.

If they were honest, they would tell you up front the total amount to include on the check and leave it at that. Instead, they now have authorization to directly access your checking account. Scary.

They actually do tell you in very small print. That checks are electronic transfers and there will be a charge. I feel thats between them and their bank not me and them, but. How many things a week do your kids bring home from school.
The principal is always pushing these things nearly daily, telling us parents that they get a cut from whatever they sell, actually make you feel guilty, but no more.
I explained to her last week not to send anything home anymore with my child for it would end up as kindling.
Like a past poster said it their convenience fee for them for me to do business with them.
