civil summons to appear in court

Hi I am from Virginia. I owe debts from several creditors for long time, but unfortunily I coundn't pay anymore. I stop paying about four year ago. Last I was telling my wife that I was thinking of using the credit counseling agentcy. Then recently I got a summon to appear in court by North American Capital Corp. They said that if I don't appear I will be arrested. Should I file bankruptcy or do the credit couseling thing, and what about the statue of limitations. Please offer any advice that is possible. Thanks ahead.
