collection after repossession

After having verbal agreement for extension, auto was repossessed in Dec.97. No communication as to owing any balance for almost 3 yrs. then,while attempting to secure another loan elsewhere,find on credit report balance owing. Called and theytold me i had a very lg. bal. auto was supposedly sold for very little. now sueing for bal and interest for the 3 yrs. Can they collect interest even after not contacting me?
