collection agency

What is the name of your state? Michigan
Got a letter from a agency in Georgia wanting me to pay on an apartment I've never had. Supposely this is from 1996 I've live in my present home since 1985 and never cosigned for anyone. In talking to them they say it's probably a mistake but I must fax them a copy of my SS & driver license to which I told they're crazy if they think I'm giving out that information. They say they have no choice but to put it on my credit record. My credits no the greatest but aslo no that bad really and don't need anything added to it. Two years ago I purchase a 2 place and there was nothing concerning this on my report. Any suggestions?

Send them a letter {CRRR} denying the debt is yours in the strongest possible terms. Demand that they validate this debt with a signed copy of the lease that clearly identifies the orginal creditor and if they place any derogatory information on your credit file you will sue them.
