Collection Agency keeps calling

What is the name of your state? Missouri

I have a collection agency that keeps calling me telling me that I owe on an account in Mississippi, which I have never been to. I have called the company that I supposedly have an account with and they can find no record of me with my Social Security Number. I have checked my credit report and it is clean. I have told the Colllection agency the last 4 digits of my Social Security number, then that person said OK and hung up. I get a call the next day asking me about the account. I do not want to give them my full Social Security number for fear of Identity theft. What can I do?

Get their name and address. You have 2 choices. If you're 100% certain the account is NOT yours, then send them a cease and desist letter telling them to never contact you again as the account is NOT yours. If you're not certain, send them a debt validation letter and demand that they PROVE its your debt.

You can read up on validation at www.creditinfocenter.com

Any letter should be sent Certified, RRR.

I have noticed in the THE FAIR DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ACT that you must notify the Collection Agency within 30 days of recieving written notice of the debt that the debt is not yours. The Collection Agency said that I was sent a letter in February, but I do not remembering ever recieving anything. Will a cease and desist letter still work?

Thanks

You never lose the right to validation. The 30 day stuff means they have the right to asume the debt is valid and continue collections if you don't demand validation. You may validate at any time and yes, a cease & desist letter will still work.
