Collection on credit card charge successfully disputedWhat is the name of your state? California I used American Airlines web site to get a frequent flyer ticket. The form at the end asked for a credit card to pay a $10 processing fee. I gave the card and clicked okay to buy the ticket. After the next window revealed a $50 fee for short time between purchase and flight. There was no button to cancel only to accept it. When the charge came through, I disputed it with the credit card company as an unauthorized charge. I was successful. Now American Airlines is trying to come after me for the $50 through a collection agency. What do you recommend to get rid of them? I plan to write a letter to dispute the validity of the collection. Thanks. |

| I would write a letter to AA's corporate offices (send it certified, return receipt mail) and explain the situation. Ask them to stop the collection activity. Also, send the collector a certified/return receipt letter and explain that the debt is not valid, and that they should immediately cease collection efforts. |

| Gottago is only partly right.... you can certainly write the corporate office. However, his suggestion to "send the collector a certified/return receipt letter and explain that the debt is not valid, and that they should immediately cease collection efforts." is incorrect and won't work. Send the debtor TWO letters, one each by certified mail. The first letter is a 'validation letter'. Send it by certified RRR. The second letter is a 'cease and desist' letter, also by certified RRR. Sample formats for both can be found at: http://www.creditinfocenter.com/

Why has he spent over $1.35M in legal fees to block disclosure... rather than spend $12 for a VALID birth cert to settle the matter? The 'certificate' he has presented doesn't qualify to get a drivers license, wouldn't allow a child to qualify for Little League, or for a real citizen to get a US passport! |
