collection hospital bills

i have been notified by a collection agency last week the man said that i owed a doctor bill for me and my wife for 1695.00 dollars whin i asked him whose name they were in he told me that it didnt matter because i was still responsoble for the bill my kids are on medical cards because we are low income this is the reason that i asked him he said that he would just sue us today i got a letter from him they are copies of the documents he sent the doctor to go ahead with suing us i am already making payments to another company for other doctor bills and thought that they were together so now what do i need to do and what could happen.
