credit card debt

What is the name of your state? michigan

I am 8 months behind on my credit card, A law firm has told me my debt has been sold and they are trying to collect for them. they want balance in full-$21,000 or they will take me to court. I am willing to make payments as my situation has improved. they won't go for this. am i to do nothing or is there something I can do? they have threatened to garnish my wages and come after property. i am willing to work with them, why won't they work with me? I cannot come up with this amount at one time. they keep calling me at work and my boss is getting very upset. I am afraid I may get fired over so many calls. please help.
