credit card debt

What is the name of your state? Texas
I am paying a credit card debt for my father which is deceased. I didn't know until much later that the credit card company would stop the finance charges if they were informed of his death. As soon as I notified them they did. My question is: are they required to go back to the time of death and take off all the finance charges that accumulated before they were notified. I know I probably do not have to pay this debt but for reasons I want go in to I will be paying the debt.
