Credit History

What is the name of your state? PA

I have basically been in hiding of my credit history for years. I was a single mother and paid only what needed to be paid - rent, food, etc. Basically, I owe things like credit card bills, old utilities, and was even taken to court over an eviction. At the time, nothing mattered but basic survival. This has been almost five years ago. Since then, I have married and have been basically living off his credit. However, at some point, I would like to own a house or apply for a car loan on my own. I am currently completing my degree and will be making decent money once I find a job. Creditors do not bother me because they do not have my current information. What do I do at this point? Can I wait a few more years and just have these debts removed from my record under a SOL? Do I go to a credit counciling service and pay what meager things I can until I get a nice job (this scares me because I think creditors will start to bother me)? Can I file bankruptcy for old debts that were soley mine without involving my husband's credit? Any advide would be great.

If the last time you paid any of those creditors was more than 4 years ago, then the SOL has already run out, which means they can't legally sue you to collect. So, I'd leave them alone, they will drop off your credit report in another 2 years. You need to pull all 3 credit reports and see what's on there and what the come-off dates are for these old accounts.

The only possible worry is that judgment you say was awarded. Judgments in PA are only good for 5 years but can be 'revived' or renewed. So, you need to call the courthouse and find out it its still 'active'. If it has not been renewed, it could also have expired and you'll be out from under that one too.

I wouldn't even consider bankruptcy in your case, you can't be sued and all these nasties will be gone from your CR in a couple of years.
