Credit Reporting Agencies

What is the name of your state? Indiana
I filed bankruptcy and discharged 1997. I now have the problem of companies buying other companies and listing negative information on my credit reports. How is it legal for them to do this? Can I do anything about it? I fail to understand how a company buys another and turns their bankrupted files into their files, or turns the discharged file into a debt write off for them. The account was closed never to be reopened, these companies that do this make it look like it is a new debt you have gone bad on. How do I get this to stop? Can I sue? It has caused me to lose a home I was trying to purchase. Even though I traced it all down and documented it to the mortgage company I was denied. Please help me to understand.
