Creditor suing

What is the name of your state? California

I have received a summons to appear in court. On the summons it says I have 30days to respond to the court. I called the creditor to set up payment arragements. They quoted $600 down and $125 per month. If I can't afford the down payment or payments can I ask for a payoff amount? Do I still have to respond to the court if the credit bureau accepts the payoff amount?
