debt collection from canada

What is the name of your state? Arizona

I previously lived in Canada, but am an American citizen. I left Canada in 1996. I am now being harassed by a collection agency for an old credit card debt. I have not heard a word from the Visa company for several years. The agency is claiming I made a payment to them in January of 1999, but I was out of the country for a year at that time. I'm not sure what to do. I think the statute of limitations is 6 years in British Columbia where the debt was originally incurred, but have no other information from the collection agency.

Any advice?

**** U.S. LAW ONLY - Did you see the RED words up there? You living in AZ doesn't change any facts.
