Meanwhile those bank fees are piling up. Time for YOU to pony up the money, huh?

Why do you want things repeated? You could just re-read the original post.

It would be great if she can find a way to keep the account open without any fees. But it is not clear what you mean by "a very small direct deposit". Are you suggesting that her employer split the direct deposits, sending most to her preferred bank, and "a very small amount" to her old bank with the silly (but legal) policy of waiving fees if she has direct deposit into the account?

I've never actually heard of anyone trying to get an employer to split a direct deposit. I know I wouldn't do it if an employee of mine asked for it (or maybe I would if they were willing to pay extra for the extra work on my part, but that would defeat the whole idea of her trying to avoid a extra fee to keep the account open for the duration).

Wrong!

After a couple of tries, that's it. He mails the check to the last known address, closes the bank account, and he's done with it.

He made a reasonable attempt to notify the friend, and he made a reasonable attempt to pay the friend with another check. He won't be responsible for the friend's bank fees. If the friend were to sue, the friend would look like irresponsible for being not making himself reasonably accessible, and for waiting so long to cash the first check.

FWIW, I split my direct deposit. My employer would let me split up to 3 banks/accounts.

Really - and how does he prove it?

Ya'll are amusing.

As for splitting the direct deposits...my pay goes in to 4 separate accounts. I could do 5, but have no reason to do so.

You've got to be joking.

This is in the notice at the bottom of the page: "FreeAdvice Forums are intended to enable consumers to benefit from the experience of other consumers who have faced similar legal issues."

Why do you offer legal advice? It's clear you have no legal training, and it's also clear you have no personal experience. You don't fit the mold.

Oh well.

Jake -

Your advice is irresponsible (at best) and could cause our OP to face criminal charges. Nice job.

It's done all the time and it really isn't a big issue.
