ex and the credit union

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? FL
Divorced appox 4yrs ago
Joint acct with ex including visa card.
Tried to close acct and visa card before and after divorce.
I was told by everyone in the Credit Union (including Credit Union manager at the time) that I could not close the acct or remove myself from the acct because I was not the primary acct holder.
Ex assured me she had done this. Account was in very good standing $0 debt 1 month before the divorce per statement that I made them give me. Had them provide me statements for the next 5 months after the divorce. Both the credit card and the bank statements show the same, $0 debt before the divorce. Only after the divorce and the refusal to take me off the acct did she run up the debt and not pay.
Approx 6months later by doing a credit report on myself found out she was in default. After many heated discussions with her and the credit union. She filed Bankruptcy. I had it at that point in time. Nothing I could do was all I heard.
They are still to this day hitting my credit report.
This week AM EX now cut my credit limit, All three credit agancy are KILLING my score
( Down to 610 as of yesterday) OPTIONS??

Was hoping for a option or two tht would help give me an idea of what I could possibly do short of having to pay someone else's debt.

I really think you should have been allowed to close the accounts, especially if they were joint accounts. The CU may have given you bad information.

You could pay off the debt and then sue her for it.

Joint account = your debt. You should have been more proactive in closing the account.

Please explain how I could have been more proactive ? I think my original post spells out what I tried to do and was NOT permitted to do by the credit union
