Ex-husband's credit account

Prior to marrying my ex-husband in 2002, we applied for a credit account with a bank in order to purchase furniture together. After marrying in 2003, the balance on the account was paid off. We divorced in 2004. I was unaware that this account was still open and able to be used.

After checking my credit report, and speaking with my ex-husband, it has come to my attention that over 18 months ago he purchased furniture again from the same store and they apparently used the same account. The account has been past due on a few occasions and I am being hassled by the bank. My ex-husband is in full agreement with me that the balance on the account has absolutely nothing to do with me and he claims he was unaware that my name was ever on the account. He has attempted to remove my name from the account but of course with a past due balance, they do not want to hear it.

Is there anything that I can do to protect myself and possibly settle this issue?
