ex husbands judgement

What is the name of your state? At the time I lived in VA

There is a judgement on my credit report for a hospital bill that was my ex husband's (husband at that time) responsibility. The only reason it's on my credit is because I was his wife. It was entered in Feb. of 1999. I know that in VA a spouse is held liable for the other spouses debt, but if we are no longer married or my name isn't on the bill or judgement, can they still garnish my wages or anything for this? I doubt they will, but I'm curious.

What on earth makes you think that in VA one spouse is liable for the debts of the other ?? VA is NOT a community property state, so unless the account that ended up in a judgment was joint, and the judgment was issued against BOTH of you, then you have NO liability for HIS debts and the judgment should NOT be on your credit report.

I thought it was strange that one credit bureau took the judgement off of my report and the other one left it on. When I called the bureau that left the info in my report, they told me it would remain on my credit since I was married to that man at the time of the debt. I contacted the courthouse where the judgement was made and they said the same thing. Guess I need to start writing some letters! Thanks Ladynred.
