False entry on credit report

What is the name of your state? Mississippi

I obtained a copy of my credit report and there is an entry from a mortgage company that isn't mine at all. What process would I go through in order to notify the creditor or credit bureau that this item was not opened by me?

Have you written or called the credit agency? Sometimes mortgages are sold from one company to another.

I have no mortgages at all. I've only ever rented my homes.

Did you purchase a report, or did you find out this information as a result of an inquiry to obtain credit?

If the latter , then I would purchase a merged report ( all three reporting agencies) and dispute that the account is not yours on all three agencies, it may take some time, and maybe another dispute, but they will investigate it, and remove the mortgage from you file.

But I would stay on top of it until it is removed.

How about just calling the mortgage company?

May - why do you keep telling people to PURCHASE a report when it can be obtained for free:

That would be because he subscribes to the debtor boards ideas that the credit bureaus have no obligations to correct information unless you purchase the report from them.

Of course, that is incorrect ... but those people and facts frequently miss each other.

You are only allowed one (1) free per year, and of course use the free one first, but it has been my experience that it usually takes more than one dispute to get something removed from your credit file. You can call the mortgage company, but they aren't likely to talk to you, since ( most likely) your ssn# will not (should not)match the number on the account, so you would probably be better served letting Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion handle that for you. If your SSN # does match, then you have got even bigger problems to deal with.

Good Luck.

You are also entitled to a copy of the corrected report.
May - I know you mean well, but your advice is ...misguided (at best)

Well, what else could it have been if not someone having gotten my SSN? How else would anything end up on one's credit report?

It could be as simple as a typographical error, or a digit off from yours, I have had to get my father-in-law's credit off of my husband's report, because they have the same name, and completely different SSN's. I hope you are not dealing with identity theft, and it is just a simple clerical error.

Ditto -- although both can and will still take time and effort to clean up.
