Frat problem

I live in Missouri and attended college here. I have been out of college for a couple of years, I recently received a letter from my fraternity saying I owe them money. I know for a fact that I do not, however the books were kept by a student (without any training) and are probably not accurate. To further complicate things I occasionally paid my dues in cash and am unable to locate some of the receipts. The fraternity has turned my account over to a colection agency, and I am worried that this will have a negative effect on my credit. What are my options to resolve this problem?
