Question

Freezing Checking Account

I wanted to add my girlfriend to my checking account but she has an open judgement against her. Since it would be a joint account, would they be able to freeze the account even if it is not hers alone? We are in Texas.

Never get involved with anyone who has financial problems. If you do though never comingle assets.
Yes, a creditor can attempt to seize anything with her name on it.

Thanks for the feedback about the checking account it was helpful. But I am a little offended that you also offered your opinion about getting involved with people with credit problems. My girlfriend is a wonderful, caring, and thoughful person. You have no idea about the situation that caused this problem and I did not ask for advice about who I choose to get involved with. I thought I posted in the legal advice forum and not on Dear Abby or Ann Landers.

You said it...there are many reasons a person has financial problems and none of these are HIS business!

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend. I get the impression I am much older than many posting here and I can't begin to count the failed marriages and relationships I've seen that came about due to financial circumstances that evolved after the union was established. I can't imagine how difficult it'll be with one party having good credit and the other not. One party will have their name on every financial document needed to function from auto loand and rental leases to credit cards. Also, knowing the other party will have difficulty having anything in there name or being able to have anything jointly is an awful lot of pressure. It is something to consider before you get too involved. Good luck!

Barry,

You forgot to mention that she is untrustworthy and in all likelihood a liar. How is it that she got that judgment against her? Did she violate an agreement? If she was willing to break her promises there - what makes you believe that she can keep them in your relationship?? bigun gave you good advice, you should heed it, I also thought it was very nice of him to apologize when he didn't do anything but offer quality, first-rate advice. I certainly wouldn't have done the same.

Your comments are ridiculous and hardly worth acknowledgement. His reply was good advice if I was asking for relationship advice, but since I am on a legal board, I thought I would get advice about the legal situation.
