Help !!I'm being falsely accused of credit card fraud !!

Hello everyone,

I have just been informed that a lady that was extremely upset called my house, and said that I had made purchases using her credit card.

My mother was the one who answered the phone, she asked the lady for her number so I could contact her, but the lady refused to give any info and said she was going to contact the police . She did say she was from Oregon. I'm in Florida.

I have never used or will ever use anyone else's credit card number so I was very taken aback when I heard this. I'm totally stressing about it since I don't know what's going to happen. I want to talk to this lady so I can find out all the information for myself, but I have no way of contacting her.
We have caller ID but this person's number did not show up-it was OUT OF AREA.

My mother said the caller knew my name (I'm not quite sure about this-will ask mother again and update) , and she obviously got my number somewhere.

What do I do ?

Do I just wait until I get contacted by the police in Oregon ?
Do I make calls to my credit card companies, and bank ?
Do I call the Post Office and make sure no one made a fake change of address- then had something sent to them under my name ?

The only thing I can attribute this to is that my credit card was stolen a few months ago and maybe that person is now using my name to defraud others.

Any thoughts ?

As to the phone call you received from the lady in Oregon -- it could be legit or it could be an attempt to defraud you. In either case, there is nothing you can do until you hear more. If she files a police report, then you will just deal with it when you are contacted.

You might think about getting your phone number changed and the new number unlisted.

Since you had your credit card stolen already, it would be prudent for you to contact the 3 credit bureaus and tell them that you believe someone may be attempting to steal your identity. I can't recall the exact term, but they have a warning they can put on your credit report that tells creditors to be sure they are dealing with the right person.

You can try talking to the post office -- perhaps they can place a hold on any change of address that is made on your name unless you present yourself in person. I don't know but it is worth a try.

Again, if you want to be ultra-cautions, contact your bank and your credit card companies and telling them that you suspect someone is trying to steal your identity. My guess is that they will put a password on your accounts. They always ask for your mother's maiden name -- don't use that as a password since a dedicated identity thief can find out your mother's maiden name -- give them a password that means something to you and that you can easily remember.

I put the fraud alert on all of my credit reports...

I'll check at the post office if anyone's tried to fill-out a fake change -of -address form with my name...

In FL, we have MANY scams being run, and this is one of them....Don't do anything else except check with the post office.

For the life of me I have no idea what kind of scam they are running ? What exactly are they trying to do ?
What's the point of accusing somebody of fraud for no reason ?

I just don't get it

I was stressed out of my mind when this happened, but I felt so much better when I asked for the fraud alerts. It makes it a bit harder for me to apply for credit -in that they have to double check with me first before they will let me open credit-but that's totally fine with me ! I'm fine with the credit cards I have... I prefer this kind of double checking before I open credit anyways...

If they get you on the phone, it then becomes "you owe me (X amount of dollars)" OR "Give me your credit card number or bank account number so I can check it against mine, might have been a screw up...."
