Question

Identity Theft

What is the name of your state? California

A few days ago I recieved a phone call form a collection agency that wanted to discuss my " delinquent " acount with Nextel for $3000.
Someone had opened a cell phone acount with my name and ssn,but gave an address in another city.
They didnt believe it wasnt me and kept calling for days. I contacted Nextel explained it was a fraud case. they apolgized and promised to "call off the dogs". The collection agency called again, what do I do?
I was NEVER notified by Nextel about the fraudulent account, the first I knew of it was when the collectors called.

I'd suggest 3 things. Go to the police dept. and fill out an ID theft complaint. Then, contact Nextel and ask for a form to file a fraud complaint. In the meantime, send a copy of the police report to them CRRR. Start a paper trail. Send the CA a letter saying you've filed a fraud complaint with Nextel and to never contact you about this matter again. Again, send it CRRR.
Finally, get copies of your credit report and see if anymore damage has been done and, place a fraud alert on your file with the CRA's. Good luck. Sadly this'll take time and be a huge PIA.

You need to handle all this via mail, with return receipt requested. I know someone who just had the same thing happen, a credit card to the tune of over $15k, same name, same SSN, different state. He contacted the CC company directly, and filled out a fraud report, in writing.

Richard,

That's why I suggest sending a letter telling them no more contact. If they continue to call, they have violated the Fair Debt Collection Pratices Act. Send the letter CRRR.
