Incorrect information on credit report

What is the name of your state? SC

I am having a problem with a company in which I have an open account (Reeds Jewelers/WFNNB). This account was opened in 1991. A purchase was made against this account then, but the item was returned and the account credited. The account remained with a zero balance and dormant until December of 2001 when a new purchase was made. I obtained a copy of my credit report earlier this year and the account is listed as being current and is in good standing. However, there is a notation that the account was 90 days past due in November of 2000. At that time, I did not have a balance on that account.

I have contacted Experian to dispute the validity of the past due listing and the results of the investigation came back that it remained. I contacted Reeds and have been told that they do not have records dating back to that time period and they weren't the ones reporting it. Supposedly, when the account was originally opened, it was done so by another creditor. No one at Reeds/WFNNB can tell me what the company's name was that I originally opended this account.

I have explained this to Experian and they tell me that they verified this information with the current address listed for Reeds/WFNNB which is noted on my credit report. They tell me to call Reeds. Reeds tells me to call Experian and find out how they verified it. I feel like I am getting a runaround from these people and can't get a straight answer. This is the only negative item on my report and I want to get it cleared. Any suggestions on what option I have?

Experian is royal pain in the patoot and they will stonewall you to avoid doing the full investigation they are supposed to.

You need to request a procedural report from Experian. This will tell you exactly HOW they supposedly verified an account that Reeds/WFNNB can't even FIND !!!! They used your name and address and didn't do a full investigation. Make them produce the report, is is your right to request it and they HAVE to produce it. In parallel, I would send a dispute letter to Reeds/WFNNB and ask them to verify to YOU. If they cannot, they should send you a letter stating such and if Experian gives you a hard time agian, you will have proof from the creditor that even THEY can't verify. If the creditor can't verify themselves, how the hell can EX do it ?? That's the trap you want to catch them in.

Send all letters certified, RRR and keep copies of everything.
