insurance--judgement

What is the name of your state? California
my mom was hurt while running a daycamp it was for a non-profit agency but she was given a small sum for her work and efforts in doing the camp. when she was hurt she was given forms for this non-profit's insurance. She sent in the claims four years ago. they made her complete the forms three times. Well the bills kept coming and due to her ignorance in thinking it would be taken care of as she never received a denial from the insurance co. she didn't follow up until she was taken to court. There is now a judgement a gainst her for the full amount. The hospital says they have a claim number for the insurance company for the bill, the insurance co. again said the paper work was not completed correctly and it needed to be resubmitted. What recourse do we have to make sure it actually gets paid? Do we have to sue the insurance co, the non-profit (which we don't want to do but will if we have to) or is it actually a worker's comp claim? Should she have been directed that way from the beginning? Will the collection agency help this process so they can actually get all their money anyway? This judgement has messed up my mom's credit so bad she can't even get a loan to pay the amount off before the insurance gets their act together.
