| A lot depends on the amount of the debt. Some debts never get to a judgment, its just too costly for them to pursue vs. the amount they'd collect.
First, in order to garnish wages, seize money or property, or put liens on anything they have to file a lawsuit. You will definitely know this is happening, so it won't happen all of a sudden.
They will try wage garnishment if your state allows it, and they can attach bank accounts. They can try to sieze other assets, like a car, and yes, they can put a lien on your home IF your name is on it. A lien usually won't mean they take your home away, but a lien will stay there until you try to sell it, and the lien would have to be satisfied before the sale could go thru.
There are state exemptions for judgments just like there are for bankruptcies, there are limitations to what they can take based on those exemptions. |
