A friend of mine owes the hospital about $75K for a bypass surgery. He is trying to negotiate a lower price. Their lower price is $60K. His doctors have all cut their bills in half and he has settled with them.
He just inherited about $100K, of which he would like to give $35K - $40K to the hospital to settle.
The money is currently in his father's name (now deceased) in trust for him. He is afraid to take the money into his own name as the hospital would want the whole bill. Can he put the money into an annuity to keep it from the claims of creditors?
He does want to pay them what he feels is a fair amount. According to Medicare, a "fair amount" is about $35K. |
