My Ex husband has ruined my credit, what can I do?What is the name of your state? Indiana I was divorced almost a year ago. My ex-husband was left with the mortgage and the home equity, and I was left with my share of other bills as well. Over the last six months I have received two calls from the home equity loan company stating that his is behind on his payments. My lawyer said not to worry because I have the divorce decree stating that I am not responsible for the mortgage or home equity loan. I have since replied for two credit cards and I have been turned down. I have three questions: 1. What should I do when applying for future credit cards? 2. Can I contact someone and show them the divorce decree to get the blimishes on my credit taken of 3. Can I sue my ex-husband for ruining my credit, which was very good until now? Thanks |

| Even though you have the divorce decree that states your EX is responsible for the mortgage, the creditors could care less. In theory your lawyer is right.. but he's also wrong. The mortgage people are not getting money from him and your name's still on the loan, so they're going to bug YOU for the money and they have every right to do so. If he defaults, they will really come after you divorce decree or not ! Your only recourse is to take him back to court for contempt for ignoring the court order that says your Ex is supposed to be paying the bill. 1 - Your name needs to be taken OFF the loans one way or another or you will still be liable and you will still get denied credit because of his delinquencies. 2- Wouldn't matter, they won't care what your decree says. 3 - About all you can do, as I said, is take him back to court for violation of the court order to pay those bills. I doubt you could sue him for it, your name is still on the loans.
