Is my wife in serious bad check trouble?

California.

So, my wife is a U.S. citizen (I am not) and she used to live in CA (we don't live in the U.S, though). She confided to me recently that, back in 2003 when she was leaving the U.S., she wrote a bad check to the ammount of 100$ in order to pay the extra baggage weight fee at the airport... So, now she is having a nervous breakdown when she thinks about visiting California again...

I read that you can go to jail for this and whatnot, but I find it hard to believe that in reality that would happen. So, what's a realistic scenario to deal with this situation?

Let me also mention (although I know this is not on topic) that on top of that, she didn't close her bank account, and now she is worried that some kind of maintenance fee+surcharge for being in red has skyrocketed into thousands of $$$ in the meantime...

Your help would be much appreciated.

**A: she owes $587.26. Please have her pay it in US dollars.

The bad check could pose a problem for her. It is a crime to write a bad check. The matter of closing the account is a civil matter and if you/she wants to clear that up, contact the bank. I am sure they would appreciate you good moral fiber and willingness to right a wrong.

@HomeGuru - Um, thanks, but now I'm curious: how did you get to that exact ammount? And what's **A (I guess I'm really a newbie and not a native english speaker)?

@Wirelessany1 - thanx, that's the route we are planning to go, but I figured I should get someone else's opinion first.

He's pulling your leg - that's figuratively not literally. Your wife will have to find out the correct amount so she can pay it.

He does the "**A" to annotate he's providing an answer. The "**" draws attention to it. That's just what he does and no one minds because it makes him happy and we want him to be happy.
