Need advice on attorney collectionsWhat is the name of your state? Kentucky I received a call yesterday from an attorney's office that is collecting a debt from my Citibank card that is deliquent (approx $5000). I have been working with a debt management company for several months now, and have already settled one account with another bank. Are these "attorney's offices" really attorneys most of the time? Or are they just collection agencies that like to threaten to sue people. I would greatly prefer that they try to work with me, as I have shown my creditors nothing but good faith in trying to repay them through this system. Citibank is the only one that it didn't seem to take on. Also, do you think it would be possible for me to set up a plan with them if they won't work my debt management company? Surely these places will take an offer of settlement before pursuing the issue into court. Any advice? I'm just trying to figure out what to expect from all of this. Thanks! |

| They are often legit law offices, however, their MAIN business is debt collection so they can and are classified as collection agencies. There are those CA's though that will call and PRETEND to be law offices when there isn't even a lawyer within spitting distance ! You can look up a 'law firm' on ******dales or your state bar assn., both will tell you what type of practice it is. If they won't work with the DMC, then you can attempt to make payment or settlement arrangements, just do everything in writing, mail it all certified RRR (for the paper trail), and don't pay anything w/o getting an agreement from them IN WRITING. You also want to negotiate for deletion from your credit report. If they won't delete, negotiate for at least an entry of 'paid'. "Settled for less than full' is a NEGATIVE on your CR and will not help you credit-wise.
