back in 1993 i bounced a check in rhode island to cvs i paid it with a money order on february 4 1994 now they are saying that i owe them 235 dollars. one since i have already paid the orignial debt i don't think i have any further responsiblity and two it has been 7 years hasn't the statue of limitations run out. what is the best course of action to take? i have already contacted the collection agency and they told me i had to get a copy of the entire money order to them. how is that possible?

The statute of limitation on debts in Rhode Island is a lengthly 10 years so it will be up to you to prove the debt was paid. Just as you should have kept the receipt for this amount of time, the original creditor should also have some kind of record also. Also, if you remember what brand of money order you used, they may also have records. You should expect to pay for a search and must be able to supply info such as how much the money order was, where you bought it and who you made it out to. I was able to get a copy of a 4 year old postal service money order, it cost $35 but saved someone a whole lot more.
