Old tuition new collection

NY- I went to college for calendar yrs 1981-82. I left because I could not afford the tuition ( after 81-82). I have not paid and the school has not provided me a transcript which was my understanding of how it would be. I already payed student loan money to the government the only ones I had, but now a collection agency has bought the tuition debt and are making an attempt to collect. There was no judgement made against me that I know of so what are my options? Thanks for any help given
