Parent used my name for credit card

Florida,

My father took out a credit card in my name. He ran up a debt on it, and now my credit history will look quite horrible for a while. Is there any way I can

A) get that removed
B) Financially sepearte myself from him so that he can't do it again

What you father did is called Identity Theft. The only way to get the fraudelent item removed from your credit history is to notify the credit card company and file a police report against your father.

You will also want to be sure to get copies of you CR from all three CBs to make sure that he has only done this that one time. Also look into getting ID Theft prevention on your CR so that this doesn't happen again.

Good luck.

Come again?
Is there any way to do this without possibly sending my dad to jail? I'd really like to not do that.

With regards to the "Look into getting ID Theft prevention on your CR" bit, elaborate?

I'm sorry, but you only have two choices:

1. File a police report, and your Father may go to jail, or

2. Assume responsibility for the debt.

That's it.

Remember that what your Father did is a felony. He wasn't thinking about what would happen to you when he took out the credit card in your name. It is your choice of course, but then you will be paying for his crime.

Use a search engine such as Google or Yahoo! to find more information on getting ID Theft prevention on your CR. All three of the CBs offer things such as alerts that will notify you when someone has applied for credit in your name.

And don't forget - If you let him off the hook this time, expect to find another credit card bill in a few months when he wants to buy some more stuff at your expense.

You have NO way of stopping him without calling the police.

Do you know how nice it is to FINALLY have someone agree with something I've said today, and not pick a fight with me?

Thank you!!!
