Parents getting calls for son.

New York State

My 70 year old parents are getting collection calls for my brother. My brother used to live at home but is now on his own with a new number. The big problem is that my dad and brother have the same name Sr. and Jr. These collector have been told that this number no longer is my brothers and he does not reside at this address. No message will be forwarded to him so stop calling. Legally what can my parents do to stop being harassed? Once the company knows that they have the wrong person aren't they supposed to stop? Please, advice is needed. Phone calls are very upsetting and threatening. They live in New York State

The first piece of advice is to read the rules of the forum, specifically # 2 above. Once you have complied then I or someone else will reply.

My response:

Write to me. What's going on?

First there is a difference between if the callers are first party collectors or not. First party collectors have more freedom as there is no 'ACT' telling them what to do or not to do. If this is his last known address and the information he has given out then it's pretty normal procedure for them to keep calling there for him. If he didn't change that information it is likely all they have. Has your parents given them a better address and phone number?
