Privacy violated

What is the name of your state? Virginia

Hi, I have been being contacted by a collector for a debt I do owe. I was working with them to pay off the loan and they were going to remove some of the late fees. Anyway, I slipped and didn't get a payment to them. I called my mother (who works in a loan department in a local branch) just to see whether they could repossess the item. She called them (unbeknownst to me) and they told her the excess charges had been written off and also told her the current payoff. This is infuriating! Can they do that? No one else is on that account. I was sure they had no right to talk to anyone except me about my debt! Anyone know? And what should I do if they had violated my rights?

I'd suggest go ahead and pay them. Obvisously, you've told your mother about your problems or she wouldn't know who to call. Technically, they did violate the FDCPA but, I don't see how you're damaged. Just pay 'em and go on with life.

What?

Bigun,
I realize alot of people on this forum are simply trying get out of making payments, but as you can see from my post I have been working with my creditors to try and make up for some hard times. Getting out of payment is not my intention.
The creditors had contacted my mother trying to reach me and they gave her a number for me to call, which I did, and that is how she knew who to contact.
I do feel like they violated my rights and if they also violated the law or the FDCPA (as you suggest) I would like some justice done, even if it just a formal complaint. So don't tell me to go on with life! They broke the law, not me. And thank you for your gracious benifit of a doubt.

File an online complaint with the FTC at www.ftc.gov. While there, read the FDCPA and you'll find your rights.
