Question about credit card debt

What is the name of your state? Texas

I am having trouble keeping up with credit card payments after being let go from my job due to lack of demand. I have contacted a non-profit debt consolidation program, however, the credit card company assures me that going through these companies is as bad on your credit report as having your accounts charged-off . I find this hard to believe but, I would like to know for sure.
