Question about getting credit reports

What is the name of your state? California

Hello everyone,

If I try to get a credit report, will my credit go down? I have heard 2 sides to this, that my credit will go down if I get too many credit reports, and other is that it will not, only in certain states. I tried reading up on it under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, but I couldnt really understand it. If someone could explain this to me would be really great. Thanks in advance.

No, ordering your own CR will not bring down your score. It's only when you apply for credit that your report gets "dinged" and could possibly lower your score.

It is always a good idea to get copies of your reports on a regular basis to make sure everything on it is legit. It helps you to be on the alert for ID Theft.

No, you're not offending me, you're just kind of weird.

Here's a tip: I prize intelligence above all else. Take that however you want.

(By the way, I was paraphrasing Janet Jackson in my previous post.)

Thumbs up

Your Rights

Veronica is right, it is not a negative thing to check your own CR. If a lot of companies are checking it it can look bad, but you have the right to check it every day if you wish.
Also, you may like to know that as of December 1 2004 you are allowed to request one free credit report every year (for everyone else I'll attach the schedual), I believe that is one report from each reporting agency.
Hope this helps!

The schedule for eligibility by region is as follows:

December 1, 2004-- Western states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming

March 1, 2005-Midwestern states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin

June 1, 2005-Southern states: Alabama Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas

September 1, 2005-Eastern states, Puerto Rico and all U.S. Territories: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Puerto Rico and all U.S. territories
